Day 1 - 29 April (KTM - Lukla - Monjo)

Incredibly stormy night with Biblical lightning & thunder. Very broken sleep.
Up at 4:45 for breakfast then bus through Kathmandu. Queues for petrol, rubbish trucks, crowds.
Caught Sita 601 to Lukla. At KTM this morning we went through three security checks with a frisk; the third was a full groin check - very thorough!!
The plane had a leak in it that dripped onto Andrew. Dornier 228 (18 seats).

Amazing landing on the 16 degree runway at the Hilary-Tenzing Airport - cheers on landing and out through the cockpit door as the back door jammed shut!

Hot sweet tea before setting off to Monjo. Feels amazing to be in the Himalayas!

Left Lukla at 1040 and got to Phakding for lunch at 1350.
Our luggage is being carried by four jobkyo (mixed yak/cow) and three boys. 55 kg max on jobkyo.

Lunch today was fried rice & chips.
Left Phakding for Monjo (2,853m) at 1530 arrived 1730. Todays walking 5h 10m.
Our first day was an up and down walk following the river. We walked through lots of villages. It's beautiful countryside and the people are very friendly.

It's a real contrast to the chaos of Kathmandu. Lots of happy snotty nosed kids. Some of the team have brought toothbrushes to give to the kids.

There are lots of temples, mani (prayer wheels), prayer flags, prayer poles (which you have to pass on the left-hand side).

The porter who carried my bag carried Glen, Megan and Rob's as well ~60kg!!

Walked in shorts & t-shirt all day, very sunny but not too hot. We're staying in a lodge two to a room. Crossed four spectacular wire rope bridges. Lots of porters carrying huge baskets of supplies.

Lots of jobkyo going up and down in groups of 2-4.
Looks like I'm rooming with Rob for the trip.

Blood result 88bpm/92% (4l water drunk).
Tomorrow is supposed to be a challenging day.
Dinner onion soup & fried vege momo. Played 500 with Meg, Darryl & Glen. D & G won.
